Tags :Uncategorised (CAPA) Christchurch International Airport (CIAL) released details of plans to develop an integrated domestic and international terminal, complete with enhanced services, facilities and retail offering. Domestic and international passengers will share facilities, such as the check-in counters and the retail areas, as well as a shared arrivals hall, providing benefits such as shorter walking distances, clearer sightlines and easier wayfinding. With an approximate cost of USD150.4 million, the development is now at detailed design and resource consent approvals stage. The first stage of construction work has been completed with the opening of a new car park building in Dec-06 and the final stage of the terminal development will be complete in late 2010. Current carparking works are underway to allow construction to commence on the new integrated check-in hall in Aug-08. This building will be constructed in the site between the existing domestic terminal and the new carparking building, and will provide minimal disruption to the travelling public. The provision of this integrated domestic and international check-in area at the closest point possible to the carpark has significant advantages, not least being passenger comfort. With large passenger lounges, extra seating, improved passenger flows and enhanced retail and food & beverage space, the new terminal will offer a top class airport experience. The airport will continue to operate throughout the project. “While some disruption will be inevitable, we will keep the public well informed of changes to the airport and our services”, says CIAL Chief Executive Rene Bakx. “We appreciate the support and patience of our airport customers during this period and we look forward to providing travellers with a greatly enhanced airport experience, further cementing Christchurch’s unique position as ‘gateway for the best of the South Island”.
