(CAPA) Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has upgraded its George Airport with an investment of USD5.9 million.

Speaking at the launch of the recently completed terminal at the George Airport in the Southern Cape, Monhla Hlahla, ACSA’s Managing Director, said: “Over and above, meeting the infrastructure needs for 2010, ACSA always strives to ensure convenience and comfort for those using its facilities. The new developments at the George Airport are in that spirit and in accordance with our long-term planning agenda.”

Passenger traffic at the airport is forecast to reach 998,396 in 2012 from projections of 669,659 in the current financial year. The design and planning of the upgrade to the George Airport began in Sep-04, while the construction occurred in a three-phase process. Phase one was an internal upgrade creating space for more check-in counters and airline operators. Phase Two of the airport upgrade comprised civil earthworks.

“These entailed construction of a new rental car parking area, which consists of 206 bays and the earthworks for another rental car building,” Hlahla said. “In addition, construction of the new staff parking area consisting of 105 bays was also undertaken. This process freed up more space at the public parking area.”

Phase Three involved the actual building upgrade and additions to the existing terminal. A new freestanding Car Rental building was constructed.

The building contract tender was awarded in Jan-06 to JV partners, JJG / Sekati Construction and the site was officially handed over last February.
