Budapest Airport (BA) commences demolition and construction works on the new Terminal 2 building at Ferihegy Airport called the SkyCourt at the end of April. During the construction period, the arrivals level of the terminal will be closed to vehicle traffic.

From 16-Apr, passenger vehicles will not be allowed to access the lower, arrivals level of Terminal 2 until the summer of 2010. Only Budapest public transport buses, Budapest Airport minibuses and taxis will be granted access.

The upper, departures level will remain open to vehicle traffic. However, due to the limited number of parking spaces, BA recommends that passengers only use this level for quick drop-off and pick-up. If you need to park for one or two hours, we recommend that you use the short stay car park opposite the terminal. If you would like to leave your car at the airport for a day or more, you can use the long stay car park, which is located a little further from the terminal and offers competitive prices.

Budapest Airport will spend approximately EUR261 million (HUF65 billion) in the next few years on developing and modernizing Ferihegy Airport.

In the first phase of BA’s BUD Future development program, BA will construct a new terminal building called the SkyCourt, which will link Terminals 2A and 2B.

The SkyCourt will be the heart and soul of the new Terminal 2. Check-in areas will be expanded by 40%, 10 new check-in counters will be built and BA will install 8 automatic check-in devices, thus significantly reducing waiting time and queuing and enabling the airport to serve more flights at the same time.

In the new terminal, all passengers will pass through a central security area. In order to expand throughput, BA will construct 14 new passenger screening channels, so that travelers are able to access the transit area quickly even as traffic grows. BA has equipped its security checkpoints with state-of-the-art technology, which makes for a quick, comfortable and secure passenger experience.

The ground floor will feature shops, whilst on the mezzanine level, a large selection of restaurants, cafés and bars will await travelers. Retail areas will be expanded by 40 000 square meters, doubling the terminal’s retail spaces. BA would like to provide world-class shopping and catering opportunities for passengers by introducing well-known Hungarian and foreign brands.

Huge windows, modern architectural solutions and breathtaking views will make the SkyCourt a fascinating experience. Ferihegy provides the first and last impressions of Hungary for visitors arriving in the country by air. In addition to the Terminal 1 building, which won the Europa Nostra architectural award, the SkyCourt will become one of the landmark buildings of Budapest and Hungary.
