Budapest Airport Apron to extended in Ferihegy

The first phase of the apron extension in Ferihegy has reached completion. The construction of this stretch of concrete of 46 000 square meters was made necessary by the ongoing terminal development project, as Terminal 2 is going to be extended in the direction of Apron North-West.

The area just handed over represents about 60% of the whole new apron extension of 75 000 square meters in total. The handover of the first phase was made urgent by the imminent onset of summer traffic. Electric and communication cables as well as the rainwater drainage system were installed underneath the pavement structure.

The cost of the full apron extension of 75 000 square meters reaches EUR 16 million, the equivalent of HUF 4.6 billion at the current exchange rate. The construction effort has been a major challenge for the staff of Budapest Airport, the airlines, and ground handling operators, as the arrangements of service roads used by ground service equipment and taxiways used by aircraft had to be re-defined almost every week in line with the progress made on the construction site. There has been no incident involving aircraft or ground vehicles in this period.

Up to the end of 2012, Budapest Airport will complete development projects worth EUR 65 million (HUF 75 billion) in Ferihegy, including the construction of the new terminal unit of 40 000 square meters called SkyCourt between the existing Terminal 2A and Terminal 2B as well as new piers to be attached to Terminal 2B and subsequently to Terminal 2A with 8+8 new boarding bridges and additional bus gates. As a result of the ‘BUD Future’ development program, the capacity of Terminal 2 of Ferihegy will reach 15 million passengers per year.
