Approval for major retail development at Darwin airport26-May-2009 | ||
Tags :South Pacific Chief Executive Officer of Darwin International Airport, Ian Kew, has welcomed Federal planning approval of a proposed AUD100 million Home and Lifestyle Super Centre in the airport’s business park, adjacent to Bunnings. Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Anthony Albanese, earlier this week announced approval of the Major Development Plan for the development. Major Development Plans are the Commonwealth equivalent of a Territory Development Consent application and are required for large scale developments on airport land. They require significant Territory and local government, community and other stakeholder consultation as part of the approval process. The granting of this approval is an important step in the process to deliver this major retail development for Darwin. “We are confident that the project will proceed,” Mr Kew said. “We have done the planning, we have a good concept and we now have planning approval.” In September 2007, Darwin International Airport signed a Heads of Agreement with Sydney developer Ticor to develop a AUD100 million Home and Lifestyle Super Centre on a nine hectare block of land in the airport’s business park precinct, next to Bunnings. This Heads of Agreement expired in Nov-2008, due to the current uncertain financial conditions in Australia. “In a different economic and financial climate, we could effectively start the project tomorrow. We are confident that we will soon secure a new joint venture partner with whom to complete this project given the more favourable economic conditions in Darwin relative to elsewhere in Australia.” said Ian Kew.
